Let it snow!

Today was a good day.  I woke up to mounds of snow outside.  I was pretty happy the kids didn’t have school today, Mike had the day off, and I didn’t have too much on the agenda.

I started off the day by making some doughnut dough before I headed into work for a few hours.  I had to design and print some programs for a service today, but it didn’t take me too long.

When I got home, Mike and the kids were shoveling our driveway, and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to start frying the doughnuts. They turned out awesome and I didn’t even burn down the house this time! (I may, or may not, have had a house-fire incident when I made doughnuts as a teenager).

Then the kids and I went outside and played in the snow.  We built a snowman, snow-woman, and a snowman wiener dog.  This is the first time in a long, loooong time that I’ve gone outside and actually played in the snow with the kids and had fun.

My Favorite Doughnut Recipe

Course Breakfast, Dessert

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup oil, or melted butter
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 7 cups bread flour
  • 2 tbsp instant yeast

  • 4 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4-1/2 cup milk add enough milk to make a thin consistency

  1. Put your dough ingredients into your bread machine and turn on to "dough cycle".  Let it run through the first rise cycle.

Roll out your dough on a slightly greased surface.  Cut out doughnuts with a doughnut cutter, or you can used two varying sizes of circular cookie cutters to cut out the doughnut holes.

Add oil to your fryer and turn it on.  Heat the oil to about 375°.  Fry doughnuts for about 1 1/2 minutes on each side (or until golden brown).  Drizzle on glaze or frosting.
